MATT TALBOT PRAYER GROUP
On Corpus Christi Sunday, June 26, 2011, the Matt Talbot prayer group would like to invite everyone to join
us for a brief moment of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the church after the 10:00 am mass and the
11:30 am mass. The Matt Talbot Prayer Group is inspired by the life of Venerable Matt Talbot (1856-1925),
also known as “the worker’s saint”, who is regarded as a patron of people who suffer from alcoholism and
addictions and struggle with sobriety. Matt Talbot offers a wonderful example of triumph over addiction,
love of the Blessed Sacrament, and devotion to Holy Mass. He inspires us also because of his dedication to
duty, care for family and fellow workers, generosity to the poor, and life of constant prayer. Matt Talbot was
also an active member of the community, joining many religious organizations in many parishes and was a
Secular Franciscan. The Matt Talbot Prayer Group meets once a month on Monday evening (usually the first
Monday) at Sacred Heart CHURCH OF THE FIRST PEOPLES for prayer. The next prayer meeting will be
after summer in October. For more information, contact Cristina at (780) 885-3078 or at
mtprayergroup@yahoo.com.

LIVING WITH DIABETES – WEEK 94
ROASTED VEGETABLES WITH HERBS
Vegetables
2 lb (1 kg) root vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, carrots and parsnips
12 lb (250 g) shallots
2 tbsp (25 ml) olive oil
1 tsp (5 ml) coarse sea salt
1 tsp (5 ml) cracked black peppercorns
Few sprigs of fresh thyme
Few sprigs of fresh rosemary
Garnish
Sprigs of fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)
Preheat the oven to 425 F (220 C) Scrub or peel the vegetables according to type and your taste. Halve or
quarter large potatoes. Cut large carrots and parsnips in half length wise; then cut the pieces across in half
again. Peel and leave shallots or onions whole.
Place the vegetables in a saucepan and pour in enough boiling water to cover them. Bring back to the boil,
then reduce the heat and simmer until the vegetables are lightly cooked but not yet tender, about 5 to 7
minutes.
Drain the vegetables and place them in a roasting pan. Brush with the oil and sprinkle with the salt and
peppercorns. Add the herb sprigs to the pan and place in the oven.
Roast until the vegetables are golden brown, crisp and tender, about 30 to 35 minutes. Turn the vegetables
over halfway through the cooking time. Serve hot, garnished with sprigs of thyme or rosemary, if desired.
(Some more ideas) Baby new vegetables can also be roasted. For example, try new potatoes, carrots, beets
and turnips. As well as root vegetables, patty pan squash and asparagus are delicious roasted. Sprinkle with
herbs and a little balsamic vinegar or lemon juice.
Quartered acorn squash is good roasted with mixed root vegetables.

SUNDAY READINGS
14TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME- July 3, 2011
First Reading: (Zechariah 9.9-10)
Thus says the Lord:
Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you;
triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut
off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the warrior’s bow shall be cut off, and
he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends
of the earth.
Responsorial Psalm:
Psalm 145
Second Reading: (1 Corinthians 2.1-5)
Brothers and sisters: You are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. If the Spirit of God who raised Jesus
from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also
through his Spirit that dwells in you. So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live
according to the flesh-for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death
the deeds of the body, you will live.
Gospel: (Matthew 11.25-30)
At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things
from the wise and the intelligent and you have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your
gracious will.”
He continued: “All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the
Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Take my yoke
upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For
my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
